Summer Research Scholars – Mentor Application

Concordia faculty or staff mentors in any discipline are invited to apply for funding to support mentoring undergraduate students in research and creative scholarship projects during summer 2021. The aim of the Office of URSCA is to work with departments and programs to support as many undergraduate student scholars and their mentors as possible each year.

The application deadline is 31 January 2021.

ELIGIBILITY: Mentors at any career stage with a full-time appointment at Concordia College for the 2021-2022 academic year are welcome to apply. Among applications of equal quality, priority will be given to proposals from junior faculty or those who have not received previous grants or awards. Undergraduate student scholars will be selected by mentors. A call for student applications is encouraged, but the process may be determined by individual mentors in consultation with their departments/programs.

TIMELINE: Summer research internships are typically between 240 and 400 hours (6-10 full-time weeks), and may be conducted as part-time or full-time work between 10 May and 20 August 2021.

SUPPORT: Mentors may apply for funding to support 1) student stipends, 2) mentor stipend, and/or 3) project costs (e.g. materials, consumables, presentation/publication costs).

EXPECTATIONS:

SUMMER PROGRAM: Student scholars are expected to participate in the summer URSCA programming, which includes weekly workshops, online ethics training, and other activities (primarily in June and July). Mentors are highly encouraged to participate and may be asked to help facilitate certain workshops or activities.

PEAK: Students have the option of completing an URSCA PEAK through their summer research or creative scholarship experience and related URSCA programming.

COSS: Whether completing a PEAK or not, students receiving support from the Office of URSCA are expected to submit their work for presentation at the Celebration of Student Scholarship (COSS) the following April.

LEARNING AGREEMENT: In order to receive a stipend, students and mentors must complete a learning agreement through a survey provided by the Office of URSCA.
